Benefits of a Ketogenic Diet

When you think of the ketogenic diet, the first thing to come to mind is probably weight loss. While losing weight is one of the perks that draw people to this diet, there are several other benefits.

The ketogenic diet is a low-carb diet in which you balance out your blood sugar to burn actual fat in the body. Don’t worry, just because you have to stay away from carbs doesn’t mean you won’t find delicious meals on keto. Let’s look at some of the benefits of keto other than weight loss.

Keto Diet Overview

To start, it’s important to understand what a ketogenic diet is. The main component of this type of diet is to cut out carbohydrates that increase blood sugar and cause excess weight storage in the body. A ketogenic diet should consist of:

  • 5% calories from carbs
  • 20% protein from meats, eggs, and cheese
  • 75% of calories are from good fats such as coconut oil, unprocessed nuts, butter, and avocado

When you replace carbohydrates with fat, your body goes into a metabolic state called ketosis. This is when the ketone levels in your body are extremely high and you burn off stored fat instead of glucose. So, when you’re on the keto diet you’ll experience the benefits of the actual fat being burned off.

Benefits of Ketogenic Diet

You’ll Have More Natural Energy

As your body enters ketosis, you’ll have more energy. It’s important to remember that when you eat carbs, they turn into sugar in your body. You can burn this energy fast, but you suffer from the ups and downs of a sugar rush. So, the energy doesn’t last very long and you’ll feel tired more often.

When on a ketogenic diet, your body is burning the actual fat. This will give you a more consistent form of energy without the high and low effects of sugar.

You May Reverse Type 2 Diabetes

As we mentioned above, a ketogenic diet is going to help with blood sugar control. One of the problems with Type 2 Diabetes is that those dealing with it have to control their blood sugar with insulin. Research shows that a ketogenic diet could potentially eliminate or reduce someone's need for insulin. The study also shows that a keto diet could reduce the glycemic response caused by carbohydrates to improve insulin resistance.

A Ketogenic Diet May Reduce Acne

A diet high in carbs could be the reason you’re still dealing with acne as an adult. Decreasing the number of carbs you’re eating on a keto diet could help if you have acne. So get ready to say goodbye to those blemishes if you decide to try out keto.

Conclusion

To sum it up, there are several benefits to a ketogenic diet other than weight loss. You’ll feel better, have more energy, and could clear up your skin. The keto diet is also a good guide if you plan to cut out gluten and sugar as a base.
